I am fascinated by the question of visual perception - how we see and interpret the strangeness of the world. My photography is concerned with exploring the subjective understanding of reality, with reflections and shadows becoming metaphors for the transitory and ephemeral nature of life.

Having family connections in the Antipodes, I find myself from time to time in Melbourne, where I enjoy visiting the National Gallery of Victoria. The front entrance is a spectacular Wall of cascading Water, through which you can see straight into the open space of the gallery. Although the wall itself is actually made of solid glass, it looks more like a curtain of water, and has all the natural attraction of a waterfall that you can go right up to and touch. The effect of watching people as they move about within the space on the other side of the water is mesmerising, and I have been utterly enthralled whilst observing the reactions of individuals as they arrive at the Art Gallery. Particularly children, who respond unselfconsciously to the sheer emotion of being able to feel the water flowing from such a height.

The Water Wall becomes an experience of altered perception. We can see through it, but everything you see is changed and changes every moment as fleetingly as our thoughts and feelings, and even life itself.
